The menacing aura around him intensified until it felt like the very air in the room was being crushed. He was so furious he felt he could tear the entire city apart.
"Where did they go after that?" he demanded.
Herbert was getting bolder. It was clear their years of friendship meant nothing to him anymore.
"We tried to track them, sir, but the trail went cold," Gabriel reported. "It's obvious he was taking measures to hide her from us."
Fairfax's rage crested into a tidal wave. He'd been poisoned and hospitalized, and she hadn't even bothered to visit or ask after him. The moment he was admitted, she had run off with Herbert.
Without a word, he ripped the IV needle from the back of his hand.
"Sir, your infusion isn't finished!" Gabriel protested.
Fairfax ignored him, swinging his legs out of bed and striding out of the room. Gabriel scrambled to follow.
As he walked, Fairfax dialed Starla's number, but the call went straight to a notification that he'd been blocked. Unable to reach her, his fury had nowhere to go. Then he redialed Tanya's number.
When her phone rang again, Tanya exploded.
"Are you sick in the head?" she shrieked, not caring if it was the most powerful man in Marina City on the line. She was done being polite.
Fairfax felt the air leave his lungs. The silence in the car became suffocating.
"And now you're asking where she is?" Tanya scoffed. "What, so you can fulfill your family's wish? Will you finally be satisfied when she's in prison?"
"Where is she?" Fairfax asked again, his voice trembling slightly. How could Starla have known what he was thinking? He never intended for her to find out.
Tanya delivered the final, devastating blow, her voice dripping with contempt. "She's in a place where she has her own human rights."
The implication was clear: with him, she had none. Their entire relationship was a cage, and he was the keeper.
