Tanya ranted for a while longer, but Starla seemed unfazed by it all. She had grown accustomed to the chaos. Tanya, on the other hand, was too furious to sleep. She tossed and turned in the bed.
"Hey, do you think Fairfax is genuinely clueless, or is he just pretending? I refuse to believe he can't see right through Brinley's act."
He had taken Yelchin Group to new heights. A man that capable in business couldn't possibly be blind to one manipulative woman.
"Tanya, just go to sleep. Aren't you tired?" Starla murmured.
"Can you even sleep now? If I were you, I'd be scrambling for a way to finalize this divorce immediately!" Tanya exclaimed. "Every extra day that man is listed as your husband is another day of pure aggravation. If you don't get away from him soon, the stress is going to kill you."
"Why can’t I? Let them lose their minds," Starla said calmly.
The entire Yelchin family was already unhinged, especially now that she was demanding back everything they had taken from her over the years. That alone was enough to drive them mad.
Tanya wanted to argue, but she noticed Starla's breathing had evened out. She was already asleep.
“She's actually sleeping?” Tanya thought, a strange sense of admiration dawning on her.
Maybe Starla was right. The ones who should be going crazy were the Yelchins. Starla's emotional stability was almost unnerving. It was as if she saved up all her insanity and unleashed it only in their presence.
Was it all an act? A performance she put on as a job? Now that the Yelchins were gone, she was free to eat and sleep peacefully?
Interesting. She was a storm of chaos for them, and an island of calm for herself.
Tanya, however, couldn't sleep. Just as she was finally drifting off, her phone began to vibrate on the nightstand. She ignored it, but the noise disturbed Starla, who kicked her several times. "Your phone," she mumbled, her voice thick with sleep and annoyance.
Tanya snatched the phone, not even bothering to look at the caller ID. "Hello?" she grumbled.
"Where is Starla?"
Gabriel nodded grimly. "No, sir. Mrs. Yelchin got out of the car on the way to the station."
He had discovered this when he called to arrange for her protection, only to find she'd never arrived. He didn't dare mention that Herbert Farley himself had been the one to pick her up. The trail had gone cold after that.
Fairfax closed his eyes, but it did nothing to quell the inferno inside him.
"Herbert picked her up again, didn't he?"
Even without being told, Fairfax had guessed correctly. Gabriel could only nod. "Yes, sir."
Fairfax said nothing, but the silence was more menacing than any shout.
