Fairfax fell silent. The mention of the poisoned broth was a sore spot, a memory that made his blood boil.
“That’s between her and me,” he snarled. “And if we die, we’ll die together. Got it?”
Herbert let out a cold laugh. “I wouldn’t recommend that.”
Knowing Fairfax’s volatile nature, Herbert felt it necessary to spell it out for him. “If you dare drag her down with you, every last person in the Yelchin family will pay a horrific price for your actions. We’ll dig up your ancestors and desecrate their graves. Even in death, they won’t find peace because of you!”
“Herbert!” Fairfax roared, enraged at the insult to his family's honor. “Are you threatening me?”
“Just divorce her,” Herbert said, his voice calm but firm. “It will save you a lot of trouble, don’t you think?”
Before Fairfax could respond, Herbert hung up.
Fuming, Fairfax kicked a large decorative planter by the door, sending it crashing to the ground. He turned his venomous gaze on Garret. “You’re a pathetic lapdog, but you should know your master has no chance with her.”
The insult caused a dangerous glint to appear in Garret’s eyes. Before Fairfax could react, Garret raised his hand. “Go inside and bring our miss out!”
Fairfax couldn’t believe it. They were actually trying to take her by force, right in front of him. He’d lived in Marina City his entire life and had never witnessed such audacity. Someone daring to challenge him on his own territory.
With a slight lift of his chin, Fairfax commanded, “Everyone, out.”
Instantly, his own bodyguards emerged from the shadows, their numbers easily matching Garret’s. The air crackled with tension as the two groups faced off, ready for a fight.
Just then, Starla appeared in the doorway. “Garret.”
Garret, whose hand was already reaching for the weapon at his waist, froze at the sound of her voice.
Fairfax was stunned. Again?
“Remember this,” she said, her voice sharp. “Never call Garret a dog again. You can’t afford the consequences.”
In Marina City, Fairfax was a man to be feared, a veritable reaper. But Garret had spilled the blood of many such men. In the years he’d spent by Yardley’s side, he was the one on the front lines, carving out the empire that was the Hoggart Group.
“You’re defending him?” Fairfax’s anger flared hotter. He was used to her getting upset when he spoke ill of Herbert, but now she was slapping him over Herbert’s lapdog?
“No,” she corrected. “I’m telling you to value your life.”
“Value my life?” he scoffed. “You think he’d dare to take my life?”
