A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 193

The world was full of people who wanted him dead, but those who actually had the nerve to try were few and far between.

“Just admit you’re protecting him. Don’t dress it up as concern for me,” he sneered. She loved Herbert so much she even protected his dogs.

Tired of arguing about Garret, Starla changed the subject. “Why did you bring me back here?”

“Why? Because our story isn’t over yet, is it?”

Fairfax pulled her into his arms again. She raised her hand to strike him once more, but this time he was ready. He caught her wrist in a crushing grip.

“Don’t you dare touch me again,” he warned, his voice low and menacing.

“And if I do? What will you do to me?” she challenged.

“Can’t we just live a peaceful life together?”

At that, Starla burst out laughing. “Are you joking? A peaceful life? With you? Who on earth could have a peaceful life with you? Anyone foolish enough to even dream of it is just asking for misery.”

Fairfax clenched his jaw. Had she come to see his world as so unbearable?

He let go of her and stepped away to take the call. “I told you, just treat whatever comes up. Stop calling me about it.”

Starla hated any mention of Brinley or her children, so he had given the hospital clear instructions: whatever happens to the baby, save him. As for Brinley, he had been trying to keep his distance.

“Mr. Yelchin, we really need to find Justin Gass as soon as possible,” the attending physician urged over the phone. Brinley’s pained sobs could be heard in the background.

It was the doctor who had recommended Justin in the first place, claiming he was the only one with a real chance of success. The baby was too small and his condition too complex for anyone else to operate with confidence. Justin, however, might not even need to perform surgery.

Fairfax pinched the bridge of his nose, a headache building. “I’ve already sent people. It’s not that simple.”
