He was concerned about his brother’s child, but some things weren’t as simple as giving an order. Justin was notoriously eccentric, and even after his people found him, they would still have to persuade him, which would take time.
“Please, as soon as possible. The baby’s condition is critical.”
Brinley’s cries grew louder, filled with despair.
“I know,” Fairfax said, then abruptly hung up.
When he turned around, Starla was gone from the doorway.
A bitter smile touched his lips. That woman… All it took was a single phone call, and she was already this sensitive. She claimed she had no feelings left for him, yet she threw a fit over a call related to Brinley. Despite all her talk of divorce, wasn't this proof that her feelings were still there?
He walked back inside and heard Molly asking Starla what she wanted for dinner. Starla’s voice was cold. “I wouldn’t dare eat anything from the Yelchin kitchen now.”
After Annika’s attempt to poison her, who knew what other family member would try something next? Living with people like this was a curse.
“Besides,” Starla added, “I had a big lunch. I’m not hungry.”
The mention of her lunch made Fairfax’s face darken instantly. Lunch with Herbert. What on earth had Herbert fed her that she was still full now?
“It seems you had a very pleasant meal with Herbert,” he said, striding into the room. He sat down next to Starla, pulled her onto his lap, and wrapped his arms around her waist, trapping her.
She struggled again. “Let me go!”
“Tell me, did you enjoy your lunch with Herbert?” he demanded.
Furious, she tried to slap him, but he was prepared. He seized her wrist.
The moment the word “jealous” left his lips, her free hand connected with his cheek.
Fairfax froze.
“Jealous my ass!” she snarled.
How could he still be smiling? She wanted out of this marriage, and he was entertaining fantasies about jealousy. The thought was so repulsive it made her curse.
Fairfax let out a short, harsh laugh. “If you’re not jealous, then what’s with the sarcastic tone?”
“When have I ever spoken about her nicely?” she shot back. Sarcastic? Of course she was sarcastic. Was she supposed to sweetly say she hoped Brinley and her dying child were doing well, that he couldn’t bear to see them suffer?
