A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 207

On the way back in the car, Fairfax made a series of calls, all concerning Justin. The information he received was not promising, and his expression grew colder with each conversation.

Just as he hung up, a call came in from Darleen. "The doctor says the baby's condition is critical! You have to get Justin!"

Fairfax was already on edge about the surgeon, who was proving infuriatingly elusive. Hearing Justin's name again just grated on his last nerve.

"I don't care what you have to do, you need to bring him back!" Darleen’s voice was frantic. "And for once, could you please focus on the child? Can't you spare even half the attention you give that woman for your own nephew?"

Her words implied that the only reason Justin hadn't been secured was because Fairfax wasn't trying hard enough.

The accusation sent a surge of fury through Fairfax. "I am trying!" he bit back, his face turning livid.

Did she think Justin was some stray dog you could just whistle for? If he were that easy to hire, he wouldn't have a reputation for being eccentric.

Sensing his rising temper, Darleen softened her tone slightly. "I just want you to put more effort into this for the baby. He's your brother's only son."

"What do you want from me? Should I just give him my life?" Fairfax shot back, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"You… that's not what I meant! I…"

"You want me to divert my attention from my wife? How are the two even related?"

"You…"

Blood? Where did the blood come from?

"What's wrong? You're…" he stammered, his heart pounding.

Starla's forehead was beaded with cold sweat from the pain. Her stomach was cramping violently. "Hospital," she gasped. "Get me to a hospital."

Panic seized Fairfax. He pulled her into a tight embrace and yelled at Gabriel, who was driving.

"Get to the nearest hospital! Now!"
