A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 208

"There's a women's and children's hospital just a mile away!" Gabriel reported, glancing at the navigation.

"Go!" Fairfax commanded.

"Yes, sir." Gabriel immediately rerouted the GPS.

Fairfax held Starla tight in his arms. "What happened? Why are you bleeding again?"

But Starla couldn't answer. Her body went limp as she lost consciousness.

The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the air, and a sense of unreality hung over Fairfax. Since bringing Starla to the hospital, he had been in a daze. She was in the emergency room, and he was standing just outside the doors, frozen, as if he'd been cast in concrete.

Gabriel returned after paying the fees. He wanted to say something to Fairfax but held back, deterred by the terrifying aura radiating from him.

Fairfax's phone buzzed incessantly. It was probably Darleen or Brinley, but he ignored it.

An hour later, Starla was wheeled out, still groggy. Fairfax rushed to the doctor as he emerged.

"Doctor, how is she?"

The doctor pulled down his mask. "A miscarriage requires a period of recovery, just like a full-term birth. She shouldn't be running around like this. It's very dangerous."

The word 'miscarriage' hit Fairfax with the force of a physical blow. He stared at the doctor in disbelief. "What did you say? A miscarriage?"

He asked the question in a numb daze, a desperate hope for denial warring with a suffocating certainty.

Gabriel nodded gravely. "Yes, sir. The doctor confirmed that."

Each word was a needle piercing Fairfax's heart.

She really had been pregnant. All her recent behavior, all the fighting… it was all because of this. And he had never once believed her. He thought she was just acting out, that her claims of a miscarriage were a delusion.

Fairfax squeezed his eyes shut. When he opened them, they were blazing with a cold fire. "I want you to interrogate Dr. Flavia personally."

The last words were practically a roar. In a sudden explosion of rage, he kicked a nearby bench, the legs screeching against the floor as it skidded across the corridor. He looked like a wild animal that had lost all control.
