A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 240

She bolted upright in bed. “Who did you say is at the police station?”

Fairfax? She could hardly believe her ears. This was Marina City. It seemed impossible for him to end up in a place like that. And even if he did, he certainly wouldn't need her to get him out.

“Fairfax Yelchin.”

What a surprise. He was used to running this city, a veritable king. How did he end up arrested?

“What did he do?” Starla asked.

“Assault.”

Starla was stunned. Assault? Wait, who did he assault? A faint sense of unease crept into her heart, but she kept her voice steady. “Why do you need me?”

“To post bail. We need a family member to pay it.”

Starla almost laughed. A family member? Since when did the Yelchins consider her family? Darleen and the others had never accepted her. Now they needed a family member, so they called her?

“I don’t have any money,” she said flatly, and hung up.

Bailing Fairfax out in the middle of the night? What a joke!

After a moment's thought, she called Rudolf, Herbert’s assistant. He answered immediately. “Ms. Lansbury.”

“Where is Herbert?”

“At the police station. He was just released.”

“Fairfax hit him?” The news that Herbert had also been at the station confirmed her suspicion. Fairfax had truly lost his mind, lashing out like a rabid dog.

Rudolf didn't answer, but Herbert’s voice came through the line. “Fairfax is a little banged up. Whether you want to bail him out is up to you.”

His tone sent a strange flutter through Starla, momentarily unsettling her heart. She stammered, unsure how to respond.

Sensing her discomfort, Herbert didn’t press the issue and ended the call after a few more words.

Just as she hung up, her phone rang again. It was Darleen.

“Go to the police station and bail him out,” Darleen commanded, her tired voice laced with extreme displeasure.

Starla scoffed. “Darleen, need I remind you that if news of Fairfax’s arrest gets out, it might have a certain effect on Yelchin Group’s stock price?”

“You…” Darleen’s breath hitched on the other end.

“Are you still half-asleep?” Starla retorted. “Who do you think you’re ordering around?”
