A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 239

Fairfax smoked nearly half a pack of cigarettes at Herbert’s mansion. After Herbert called his theory absurd, he had fallen silent, not speaking again until the cigarettes were gone.

He stood up, looking down at Herbert on the sofa. “She and I are not getting a divorce. You and Hoggart Group can both back off.”

It was clear he had completely dismissed Herbert’s comment. He was now convinced that Herbert and Hoggart Group were colluding to pressure him.

“And on what grounds do you think you can sustain this marriage of yours?” Herbert asked mockingly as Fairfax reached the door.

Fairfax froze, turning back to face him. His eyes were like those of a predator in the dark—sharp and dangerous.

“Have you ever trusted her?” Herbert pressed.

Fairfax remained silent.

“Didn’t I warn you to investigate Brinley’s depression?”

Fairfax stared at Herbert, his face devoid of any warmth. “What are you trying to say?”

“The child,” Herbert said, his voice laced with disappointment. “You actually believe Starla was the one who took her.”

When Fairfax had accused him of teaching Starla to be unscrupulous enough to kidnap a baby, Herbert knew. Before coming here, Fairfax must have already confronted Starla about the child, and with the same accusatory tone.

Seeing Fairfax’s silence, Herbert scoffed. “What’s the point of continuing a marriage with no trust?”

“What does that have to do with you?” Fairfax snapped.

Starla was his wife. They would spend the rest of their lives together, growing old side-by-side. What did it matter what an outsider thought?

“It has nothing to do with me,” Herbert conceded. “But if she wants to leave you, I will do everything in my power to help her.”

“Shall we find out?”

Herbert’s words were the spark that ignited Fairfax’s fury. He lost control and swung his fist.

“Buzz, buzz, buzz.”

Starla had just fallen asleep when her phone began vibrating relentlessly. She picked it up without checking the number. “Hello?”

“Starla Lansbury, your husband, Fairfax Yelchin, is currently at the police station. I’m afraid you’ll need to come down.”

Starla’s drowsiness vanished in an instant. The words “police precinct” shocked her into full alertness.
