A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 238

“Are you trying to say Brinley took her own child to frame you?” Fairfax retorted.

Starla was speechless. Her heart had grown cold from all that had happened recently, but hearing those words from him, she actually laughed.

“So you think I’m the one trying to frame Brinley?”

“Remember this,” Fairfax said, his voice dangerously low, each word a threat. “Have someone bring the child back before sunrise.”

“If that’s what you think, then I’ll tell you right now: I can’t bring that child back.”

“Starla!” he roared.

“You weren’t going to keep your word anyway, were you?” she shot back. All his talk about granting a divorce if she returned the child was just empty promises. She didn't believe a single word he said anymore.

“You’d better bring that child back!” Fairfax warned, his voice tight with fury.

Starla simply hung up. There was no point wasting her breath on a man who refused to listen to reason.

After ending the call with Fairfax, she immediately dialed Garret.

He answered quickly. “Miss.”

“Stay out of it.”

“Miss, you don’t want to use the baby to secure the divorce?” Garret asked. Fairfax cared deeply about his deceased brother’s child. Using the baby as leverage would have been the easiest way.

“Don’t get yourself involved with that baby,” Starla warned. “Something might be wrong with her.”

Garret fell silent.

“You’ve teamed up with Hoggart Group?” Fairfax asked.

At the mention of Hoggart Group, Herbert’s hand paused. He lifted his gaze, his eyes cool as he looked at Fairfax without a word.

“You two are really working hard, aren’t you?” Fairfax said through gritted teeth. The “you two” he was referring to was clearly Starla and Herbert.

Herbert took a sip of his wine.

“You’re pressuring me with Hoggart Group to force a divorce,” Fairfax continued, his voice laced with bitterness, “and she…”

He paused, then looked directly at Herbert and let out a short, harsh laugh. “And she goes and kidnaps a child to do the same! Herbert, did you teach her to be so vicious? Did you teach her to be as unscrupulous as you are, just so she could be with you?”

“Your imagination could be a little more absurd,” Herbert replied calmly.
