A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 237

Not long after Fairfax left, the bodyguards returned in full force. Darleen and Xenia departed, leaving Brinley seething at the sight of her reinstated security detail.

“If anything comes up, have him contact you directly. And be careful,” Brinley instructed Sally.

Sally nodded. “Don’t worry, Miss.”

With so many of Fairfax’s men around, it wouldn’t be easy for them to make a move.

“From the way Fairfax looked, do you think he heard us?” Brinley whispered. With guards swarming the hallway, she didn’t dare speak too loudly.

Sally’s expression soured at the memory. She thought for a moment, then shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

After all, if he had heard anything, he wouldn’t have just left like that.

Brinley considered this, and the knot of anxiety in her chest loosened slightly. “Still, we need to be careful from now on.”

That had been a close call. She had been terrified that Fairfax had overheard them, and the look on his face had sent shivers down her spine.

...

Meanwhile, Fairfax was on his way to see Herbert. Gabriel was driving, and Fairfax sat in silence, a cigarette smoldering between his fingers. He didn’t speak until they stopped at a red light.

“She was afraid, wasn’t she?”

The “she” was Brinley. He had clearly sensed her terror when she faced him, the way her eyes darted away from his.

Gabriel recalled Brinley’s trembling frame. She was obviously scared of something.

“Her child just went missing,” Gabriel reasoned. “She’s probably terrified the baby won’t be brought back alive.”

“It wasn’t fear of me?”

“A lead?” Fairfax repeated, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

On the other end of the line, Starla’s grip on her phone tightened. After much deliberation, she had decided to call him.

If Brinley was willing to use her own child as a pawn, her scheme was likely far more ambitious than just forcing a divorce. She was trying to shatter their relationship beyond repair.

The truth was, even without all this, Starla’s feelings for Fairfax were already in ruins. But Brinley was ruthless. She wanted to crush whatever affection Fairfax still had for Starla as well.

Given how vicious Brinley could be, there was no telling what else she might do. So, the moment she got a lead, Starla had called him.

But his attitude on the phone was… discouraging.

“What? You don’t believe me?” Starla asked.
