The Bergen City project was proving to be a real headache. Fairfax had been holed up in the conference room ever since he arrived, still reeling from the heavy losses.
And there was more trouble brewing.
The Farley Group was threatening to pull out of all the joint ventures they had with the Yelchin Group. These projects were already halfway through, and if the Farley Group withdrew all their funding now, it would create a massive financial black hole for the Yelchin Group.
Fairfax was completely overwhelmed.
When Darleen and Xenia arrived, Fairfax was still in his meeting, but Darleen was insistent on seeing him immediately. Losing her patience, she tried to storm into the conference room, only to be blocked by Vivian from the executive assistants' department.
"Ma'am, you can't go in there," Vivian said firmly.
"I have something urgent to discuss!" Darleen snapped.
"But Mr. Yelchin's business is also urgent," Vivian replied, her tone respectful but unyielding.
The drama of the past six months had been the talk of the entire company. Everyone knew that Starla did not get along with the Yelchin family elders. If Starla came to see Fairfax, it was to argue about them. And if the elders came, it was inevitably to demand a divorce. The whole situation had given the younger employees a profound realization: a successful man without a sensible family supporting him was just courting disaster.
Fairfax's romantic turmoil had even caused a wave of commitment-phobia among the staff. Vivian herself was seriously considering dumping her fiancé, whom she was supposed to marry soon.
Xenia stepped forward, sneering, "You know who this is, and you still dare to block her?"
Vivian adjusted her glasses and said with a perfectly straight face, "Miss, the reason your allowance wasn't deposited is because the company is experiencing some cash flow problems."
For the last six months, Fairfax's personal moods had poisoned the work atmosphere, and frankly, Vivian was sick of her job. Faced with Xenia’s disdainful glare, she had no problem dishing out a calm, sharp retort.
Xenia was speechless. So was Darleen. Their faces froze.
"But my contract states that my salary will be docked if I leave without a proper handover," Vivian countered.
"You're fired!" Xenia screeched, losing her composure.
"On what grounds?" Vivian asked.
"Do you need a reason? Look at your attitude!"
"My job description doesn't require me to grovel before the boss's family," Vivian stated flatly.
Both women were left fuming, their faces contorted with rage. They couldn't believe they were stooping to argue with a mere assistant. It was beneath them.
Darleen, desperate to see her son, tried to push past Vivian again.
