A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 268

Meanwhile, at Cosmos Summit, Starla was enjoying her food. The kitchen staff had also prepared a platter of various roasted fruits for her. Upon her return, both Garret and the household staff had commented on how much weight she’d lost while living with Fairfax, so they had been plying her with food all afternoon.

Her phone sat on the dining table, Darleen’s frantic voice screaming through the speaker. "You came to the Yelchin family with nothing! In all these years, you haven't even given us a child! You've made zero contributions to the Yelchin Group. On what grounds do you demand half of everything?"

The amount Starla was asking for was substantial—enough to elevate her several social classes. Did she really think she could use a divorce to climb the social ladder? Not while Darleen had anything to say about it.

In response to Darleen's tirade, Starla replied nonchalantly, "On the grounds that I was his wife for several years. His legal, wedded wife. And while our children were never born, I did carry two of them for him. And by the way..."

She paused for effect.

"The loss of those two children was your family's fault, not mine."

"What are you talking about?" Darleen sputtered. "Are you accusing us of abuse? We never laid a hand on you!"

"Darleen, mental abuse is still abuse."

"You—!" The accusation nearly sent Darleen into cardiac arrest. "With your attitude, who could possibly abuse you? You're the one who abused us! We're the ones suffering from mental trauma!"

Darleen was losing her mind. She admitted she hadn't been kind to Starla over the years, but hadn't Starla given as good as she got? And now she was claiming to be a victim of mental abuse? Was there anyone more shameless?

"I'll have a new agreement drawn up immediately for Fairfax to sign. You will sign the one I provide."

"I'm sorry, Darleen, but on this matter, I am not willing to compromise."

"You—!" Darleen, still in the reception room, felt her strength drain away. "Have you no shame?"

"I want a divorce," Starla stated simply.

Shame? Why would she bother with shame when dealing with the Yelchins? She didn't need that; she needed a divorce. And her share of the assets.
