A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 275

Fairfax took a harsh drag from his cigarette. He didn't speak or move, and seeing him like this only fueled Darleen’s anger.

"What? Are you still planning to keep that menace in this family after she caused the death of a Yelchin? She even slapped me today!"

Darleen's cheek still throbbed from where Starla had struck her.

Fairfax finally spoke. "I told you before, stay out of my marriage."

Even now, he couldn't bring himself to divorce Starla. A hollow ache had settled in his chest, a stark realization that if they divorced, he would lose her for good. And that was something he couldn't accept.

His resistance only fanned the flames of Darleen’s fury.

"Your niece is dead, and she wasn't even a month old! Fairfax, your brother only left behind those two children. The boy is still in the ICU, and we don't even know if he'll make it. The girl, the only healthy one left, is gone now. Gone because Starla was so desperate to divorce you that she resorted to kidnapping! Are you still unwilling to let her go?"

Darleen’s voice rose to a roar, tears streaming down her face. She wasn't going to let this go. The divorce was just the first step. A life in prison—that was the fate Starla deserved.

Let her take half his assets. Who cared? She'd never get to spend a cent of it anyway. They'd find a way to get the money back. She'd rot in a cell for the rest of her life, never knowing the difference. Once she was locked away, it would all be over. Darleen would never have to see that venomous woman again.

Fairfax stared at Darleen, his eyes filled with a chilling coldness, but he remained silent.

Darleen pushed the divorce agreement across the table toward him. "I need to be able to face your dead brother."

Fairfax closed his eyes. "I have one condition."

"What condition?" Darleen asked.

"She can't go to prison. The child's death, don't…" His voice trailed off, thick with emotion.

"It's too late," Darleen said flatly. "We've already called the police."

A child was dead now. Did he really think they wouldn't involve the authorities?
