A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 283

After they finished eating, Caden spoke again. “You know, something about one of Brinley’s twins dying just doesn’t feel right to me.”

“What doesn’t feel right?” Herbert asked calmly, his tone suggesting a complete control over the situation, as if nothing could possibly derail his plans.

“I think she deliberately framed Starla,” Caden said.

Herbert remained silent.

“Think about it,” Caden continued. “The baby girl was perfectly fine. Why wouldn’t she use the sick boy to frame Starla? Because she couldn’t get him out of the hospital. Fairfax has had him under tight security this whole time.”

“So why use the healthy child?” Herbert prompted.

“Because that child wasn't healthy either.”

The moment the words left Caden’s mouth, Herbert lifted his eyes and gave him a sharp look.

Caden pressed on, “If the baby was perfectly healthy, she wouldn’t have killed her just to frame Starla, right?”

Caden was now outright accusing Brinley of murder, a testament to how venomous he believed her to be.

It made sense. For the past six months, she had used every excuse in the book to monopolize her brother-in-law. Whenever Fairfax returned to Petal Villa, she would find a way to summon him. At first, it was her own poor health. When that stopped working, she used the babies. Eventually, she combined the two, citing her depression and the needs of her children.

To Caden, those babies had always been nothing more than pawns for Brinley.

Seeing Herbert watching him intently without a word, Caden continued, “The child must have already been failing. She just used the situation to try and get rid of Starla. She wants to send Starla to prison so there’s absolutely no chance of her and Fairfax getting back together.”

Caden’s mouth twitched. “You’re right. She doesn’t need your help at all.”

Recalling some rumors he’d heard recently, he cautiously asked, “Is Starla really the Hoggart Group’s…?”

He trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid.

Herbert shot him a look. “You know that much?”

He had thought Starla’s connection to the Hoggart family was still a tightly kept secret.

Caden scoffed. “Do you really think Hoggart Group would be interested in the project with Palatial? Or that any project in Bergen City, no matter how large, would be big enough to catch their eye? And don’t tell me it’s because of your partnership with them. That doesn’t add up.”
