A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 284

When Caden first learned of Starla's connection to Hoggart Group, he found it hard to believe. But after seeing the group's recent moves against Yelchin Group, he was convinced.

A cold smile touched Herbert's lips. “You've got a better head on your shoulders than Fairfax.”

Fairfax had attributed all of Hoggart Group’s recent attacks to Herbert, never once suspecting that Starla herself was connected to them. Caden, on the other hand, had pieced it all together.

Caden let out a dry laugh. “Fairfax’s brain has been scrambled by Brinley lately. No, the whole Yelchin family has been driving him crazy.”

Herbert didn't respond. He had little interest in discussing Brinley.

“Last night, Fairfax nearly scrambled my brain too,” Caden added.

If it hadn't been for Fairfax's panicked rant, he never would have worried that Brinley might somehow get Starla into trouble. Now, it seemed there was nothing to worry about at all.

Starla was confined to Cosmos Summit. Yardley had given strict orders that she wasn’t to go anywhere until her health stabilized.

That morning, Garret came to report to her. “Miss, we have the divorce agreement. The lawyer is on his way to the registry office to finalize the proceedings with Fairfax.”

Starla nodded. “Good.”

Her voice was calm. It was over between her and Fairfax. In truth, it should have ended long ago; he was the one who had refused to let go. Now, finally, it was done. She was free from that gilded cage, from the condescending glares of the Yelchins. Whoever wanted that life was welcome to it.

As for Brinley, how much longer did she think she could curry favor with Darleen? That hypocritical old woman was as fickle as they come. The moment Harriet’s benefactor in Yoran Country fell from grace, Brinley's good days with the Yelchins would be over.

The buzz of her phone cut through her thoughts. The call was from Camilla, the director of her old orphanage.

“Yes, now. She was always so fond of you. Please, come say goodbye.”

“Okay, I’m on my way. Where is she?”

“I’ll text you the address.”

“Alright.”

Hanging up the phone, Starla felt a lingering ache in her heart. If she remembered correctly, Dolores couldn't be much older than seventy.

Time moved so fast. Too fast...
