A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 290

For Herbert to drag Hoggart Group into their personal conflict over Starla was nothing short of cheating.

“A fair fight with you?” Herbert’s voice was laced with derision.

“Isn’t that what this is about? If this is because of Starla, you can stop. We’re divorced now.”

The word ‘divorced’ was a fresh wound, and saying it aloud sent a jolt of pain through him. He remembered the first time he saw her, a single glance that felt like a lifetime. The moment he married her, he had sworn he would never let her go. But now, because of Herbert, it was over.

Herbert let out a low laugh. “Fairfax, you really aren’t very bright. You think Hoggart Group would attack you on behalf of a mere business partner?”

“Why else?” Fairfax shot back. “You’re the only person in Marina City with ties to them!”

“We are just partners,” Herbert stated coolly, implying that his involvement ended there.

But Fairfax wasn't listening, nor did he believe it. Farley Group was also pulling its investments from their joint projects, throwing Yelchin Group into chaos. He was overwhelmed.

Before Fairfax could argue further, Herbert hung up and tossed the phone back to Rudolf.

“So, Mr. Yelchin still doesn’t know the real reason Hoggart Group is targeting him?” Rudolf asked.

“With his mind, the only thing he can think about right now is Brinley.”

Herbert had once considered Fairfax to be sharp, but not anymore.

“Are they officially divorced?” Herbert asked.

“Buy everything of value,” Herbert instructed.

Rudolf stared at him. “Everything?”

“Yes, everything.”

“Sir… I heard a rumor that Darleen plans to bid on something for Brinley, as a reward for the twins.” He wasn’t sure if it was true, but if they bought out the entire auction, it would certainly anger the Yelchins.

True or not, Herbert believed it. His eyes narrowed. “Buy it all,” he repeated.

Fairfax already thought he was the enemy. If he was going to be blamed, he might as well play the part.
