A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 291

Back at the Luwood Mountain estate, Fairfax’s stomach was still in knots.

Molly brought him some broth, but he only managed a few sips before asking for stomach medicine instead.

As Molly handed him the pills and a glass of water, she murmured, “When Mrs. Yelchin was here, your stomach never troubled you like this.”

Even after a night of heavy drinking, Fairfax would be fine the next morning. Molly didn't know Starla's secret, but now that she was gone, the effects were obvious.

Fairfax’s hand paused, and his expression darkened at the mention of her name. He swallowed the medication just as his phone rang again. It was Gabriel.

“Sir, you need to get to the office immediately!”

“What now?” Fairfax’s brow furrowed at the urgency in Gabriel’s voice.

“Several of our overseas projects are failing one after another. We just got word that we’ve lost major contracts in Barcester and Zephyria. A number of major shareholders are already at the office, and things are getting tense.”

First Bergen City, and now this?

Fairfax set down his glass and rubbed his aching temples. “Is it Hoggart Group again?”

The question was laced with suppressed rage.

“Yes.”

Gabriel froze, unsure how to respond to the sharp, menacing question.

“She hasn’t been arrested?” Fairfax’s voice was like ice.

By all rights, Starla should have been taken into custody yesterday after the police report was filed. But he had received no such news.

“I don’t believe so,” Gabriel said. He had people at the police station. They would have notified him if she’d been brought in.

Fairfax’s aura became even more frigid. “The police are doing nothing about something this major?”

Even though he had demanded she not be sent to prison as a condition of the divorce, he knew his mother would never have let Starla off so easily. Was it Herbert again, pulling strings to protect her?
