After returning to Cosmos Summit, Starla locked herself in her room.
Garret, concerned by her uncharacteristic behavior, had someone look into her meeting with the old woman. The news that came back was shocking: Dolores had passed away just moments after Starla left.
Yardley called, and Garret answered. “Sir.”
“What’s wrong with Starla? Why isn’t she answering my calls?” Yardley’s deep voice came through the line.
“She met with an elderly woman today,” Garret reported. “She hasn’t been herself since. As soon as she got back, she shut herself in her room.”
“What did they talk about?”
“I’m not sure. They spoke privately.”
“Find out,” Yardley commanded.
Garret’s heart tightened. “The woman passed away, sir.”
Yardley fell silent. Dying words? And they had affected Starla this deeply? What could they have been about?
“Who was this woman?”
“Someone who took care of her at the orphanage.”
“Did her divorce go through?”
“No, sir. Bethany was in a car accident on her way to the registration office. The vehicle exploded, but they managed to rescue her.”
At the mention of an accident, Yardley’s voice grew tense. “Was it Fairfax?”
How could the Yelchins be allowed to live? Her mother, watching from above, surely wouldn't want her to simply walk away from the family before they were utterly destroyed. How could she leave when she had done nothing at all?
Her easy agreement stunned Fairfax into silence. He had expected screaming, accusations, a full-blown fight—the raw, furious Starla he had come to know recently. He had not expected this calm, almost gentle acquiescence. Her tone even held a hint of a smile. A gentle, smiling tone?
Was that even possible? Was he hallucinating, hearing a ghost of the woman she used to be? There had been a time, a brief, sweet time, when she had always spoken to him with a smile in her voice. But now…
Sensing his silence, Starla spoke again. “You don’t want a divorce, right? Then let’s not get one.” Her voice was still soft, the smile in it now unmistakable.
This time, Fairfax heard it clearly. But why did a voice so gentle sound so incredibly dangerous? But before he could respond, she hung up. Listening to the dial tone, Fairfax frowned deeply.
Gabriel entered the office. “Sir, the flight to Yoran Country is ready. We can head to the airport.”
“Cancel it.”
