A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 298

"Cancel it?" Gabriel asked. Cancel? But they needed to meet with the Hoggart Group to assess the situation.

Fairfax closed his eyes again. "Yes, cancel it."

His mind was replaying Starla's gentle tone from their phone call. It was too gentle. He knew better than to believe she suddenly wanted to reconcile. He had no idea what she was planning, but a deep sense of unease settled over him. Her soft laughter felt menacing.

Gabriel nodded. "Understood."

"Still no word from them?"

'Them' being the police. If they had solid evidence, she should have been arrested by now. Yet he had just been able to call her.

Gabriel shook his head. "Nothing."

After a moment, he added, "It's likely insufficient evidence. Otherwise, they would have acted by now."

Fairfax let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Insufficient evidence, or Herbert pulling strings for her?"

Gabriel didn't respond. The possibility of Herbert's intervention was high; he had always protected her.

Fairfax rubbed his throbbing temples, haunted by the memory of her voice. After fighting so hard for a divorce, she had suddenly agreed not to get one?

No, that didn't make sense. She would never just give in like that. There had to be a reason.

What was she planning? Her sudden change of heart, her willingness to stay married… did she have something else in mind?

Remembering her past schemes, Fairfax shot a sharp look at Gabriel. "Double the security around Brinley and the baby. Especially the baby!"

"Yes, sir," Gabriel confirmed.

"I'm going to personally…" She paused, and when she spoke again, the words were like shards of ice. "...tear the Yelchin family to shreds."

The statement was so cold it was breathtaking. Even over the phone, Yardley felt a chill.

"What happened?" he demanded.

"I'm going to tear them apart, piece by piece," she repeated. Fairfax wanted to stay married? She would make him regret every single word he had said to her on that call. She would teach him the true meaning of regret.

Yardley remained silent, waiting.

"And I'm going to take their precious pride, crush it into dust, and feed it to the dogs!"

Every word was laced with an endless, biting chill.
