Selestia's voice dripped with disdain. She had a long-standing crush on Fairfax and had been miserable for weeks when she learned of his marriage to Starla. Seeing Starla treat him so poorly now made her want to slap the woman herself. But with Herbert there, she wouldn't dare.
"Honestly," Selestia added with a sigh, "what does Fairfax even see in a woman like that?"
Just then, Fairfax arrived. His eyes immediately locked on Herbert and Starla, seated together in the very front row. A surge of hot anger rushed to his head.
Darleen saw them too, and her teeth clenched. "She's not even divorced from you yet, and she's already clinging to Herbert?"
Fairfax balled his hands into fists and started forward, but Darleen grabbed his arm. "What are you doing?"
Fairfax shot her a fiery glare, not bothering to speak.
"The blue diamond is being auctioned today," Darleen hissed, knowing exactly what he intended. "Half the city's elite are here. Don't you dare cause a scene!"
As much as she wanted to tear Starla apart herself, she refused to become a public spectacle. The Yelchin family had suffered enough embarrassment lately.
…
Meanwhile, Garret was on the phone with Yardley.
"Rest assured, sir," Garret reported. "Everything at the auction is taken care of. Miss will leave after securing the blue diamond. I have people in place to continue bidding on the remaining items."
The Yelchins wouldn't be getting their hands on a single thing today. From now on, they wouldn't even have the satisfaction of a minor victory.
"She said she's moving into the Yelchin estate. Are the arrangements made?" Yardley asked.
"Don't worry, it's all handled. Even when she's living there, our people will be the ones taking care of her."
Starla, however, ignored them completely.
The first item presented was the night's main event: a ten-carat blue diamond. It wasn't large, but it was breathtakingly beautiful. Starla could suddenly understand why Yardley would use something like this to win over a girlfriend. If she were a rich man, she'd do the same. It was simply stunning!
"It's beautiful," she murmured, almost to herself. It was probably the most exquisite piece of jewelry she had seen in all her years married to Fairfax.
Herbert glanced at her. "You like it?"
"Yes, I do," Starla nodded. She'd never understood the obsession many women had with sparkly things, but now she got it. Perhaps nothing else had ever quite met her aesthetic standard. This blue diamond, however, she loved.
"I'll buy it for you," Herbert said.
Before Starla could even react, the air around Fairfax crackled with barely suppressed fury.
