Like Tanya, once he understood the deep-seated grudge between Starla and the Yelchins, Herbert fully supported her decision not to divorce until she had torn the family to shreds.
Fairfax had been fighting so hard to avoid the divorce. Soon, he would regret it, he would want to end the marriage even more desperately than she did.
…
At the auction house.
Fairfax had received an early morning call from Darleen, summoning him to bid on a blue diamond for Brinley. She wanted to have it made into a ring, a gift for delivering twins.
Fairfax, already overwhelmed with problems at the company, hesitated. "Isn't that a bit extravagant?"
"Your brother is gone, and she gave the Yelchin family twins," Darleen argued. "How is it extravagant? We've already lost one of the babies, so think of this as compensation for her loss."
Darleen's words felt like a punch to the gut.
"Alright, I understand," he conceded. He hadn't wanted to go, but Darleen's use of his late brother and the children left him feeling obligated to provide Brinley with some form of compensation. He agreed to go with her.
Xenia was there as well. She had her eye on a red diamond that was up for auction and had arrived early with a friend, knowing Darleen would be there to bid on a gift for Brinley.
Not long after they arrived, they saw Starla walking in with Herbert, her hand resting comfortably in the crook of his arm.
But Selestia's words only made Xenia grind her teeth harder. If she could, she would march over and slap Starla across the face. But one look at the refined yet intimidating man beside her, and her courage failed her.
Herbert was devastatingly handsome, even with his cold demeanor, which only made Xenia desire him more. Seeing him with Starla was a pain so sharp it felt hard to breathe.
She took a deep breath. "I'm not his fiancée yet," she told Selestia. "Once the Farley family makes the announcement and I officially have that title, then I'll deal with her."
She needed a legitimate reason to put Starla in her place.
"I can't believe who Fairfax married," Selestia scoffed. "She has a wonderful man like him and still can't behave herself."
