A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 331

A short while later, the takeout arrived.

Seeing Darleen had ordered food for Brinley, Starla gave Garret a pointed look. Garret understood and gestured to one of the maids, who moved swiftly. She walked over to Rachel, a long-time servant of the Yelchin family, and snatched the food delivery from her hands.

Rachel’s face darkened. “What are you doing?”

She tried to grab it back, but the other maid simply turned and walked into the kitchen.

Rachel moved to follow, but one of Starla’s staff blocked her path. She looked at Starla, her voice tight. “What is the meaning of this?”

Starla ignored her completely. She didn't feel the need to respond to a mere servant.

Soon, the maid who had taken the food returned from the kitchen. The packaging was still sealed, and she thrust it back into Rachel’s hands.

Rachel glanced at the bag, then at the maid who had taken it. “What did you do to the food?”

But the maid simply returned to her post behind Garret, standing respectfully silent. No one on Starla’s side would answer any questions.

Seeing their silence, Rachel knew she, as a servant, couldn’t press the issue further. Fuming, she carried the takeout upstairs.

Now that the food had passed through their hands, it was anyone’s guess whether Darleen and the others would dare to eat it.

Upstairs, Rachel knocked on Brinley’s door. When Darleen saw the food, she immediately took it from Rachel’s hands.

“Finally,” she sighed. “I’m starving!”

The delivery had taken a long time, and with the tight security at the Yelchin estate, it wasn't easy for delivery drivers to get in.

Just as Darleen was about to open the containers, Rachel stopped her. “Ma’am.” Her tone was heavy with apprehension.

“I don’t know. The maid took it to the kitchen. I couldn’t see what she did.”

It didn’t matter what, if anything, had been added. They couldn’t risk eating it now.

Darleen couldn't take it anymore. She immediately called Fairfax. It was already two in the afternoon.

The moment he answered, she unleashed her fury into the phone. “You said you’d be back this afternoon! It’s time you came home!”

“I’m still busy with a few things,” Fairfax replied, his voice strained. The company was in chaos, and Darleen’s yelling only made his headache worse.

“I can’t stand it! I can’t stand it for another minute!” Darleen screamed into the phone. If she had to endure this any longer, she was going to lose her mind. She felt a severe depression coming on, worse than anything Brinley was experiencing.

“Weren’t you the one who wanted her back at the estate to serve you?” Fairfax shot back, his patience worn thin by her theatrics. “She’s only been back a few hours, and you’re already falling apart?”
