Fairfax’s dismissive tone made Darleen even more furious. It felt like a betrayal. Was he mocking her for how she used to treat Starla? That was all in the past!
Darleen gritted her teeth. “Do you really think she’s here to ‘serve' me?!”
This kind of service was a death sentence. It was clear Starla had returned to destroy them.
What had they ever done to that vicious woman to deserve this? All they did was look down on her, and with her background, who wouldn’t? Now she was using that as an excuse to torment them. It was infuriating!
Fairfax, wanting to end the conversation, cut her off. “I’ll be back tonight. I have to go.”
When Darleen heard he wouldn’t be back until evening, she exploded. “By the time you get back, your mother will be dead!”
Before she could say more, the line went dead with a dial tone.
Darleen stood there, stunned. Did he not care? She wasn't just making idle threats! Given Starla's current state, who knew what she was capable of?
Furious, Darleen stormed downstairs to find Starla, but she was nowhere in sight. Only her staff remained, guarding the kitchen and living room. The items they had thrown from the second floor that morning were still scattered across the floor, completely untouched.
Already on edge, the mess sent Darleen into another rage. “Why hasn’t anyone cleaned up this living room?”
“I… I’ll do it right away!” Rachel stammered.
“You’ll do nothing of the sort,” Darleen snapped. “Her people made this mess, let them clean it up.”
But when she glared at Starla's staff, who were standing right there, they didn't even acknowledge her.
“Starla, you get out here!” Darleen screamed.
Before she could finish, two maids grabbed her, clamped a hand over her mouth, and dragged her to the top of the stairs. They didn’t let go until they were sure her shouting wouldn’t disturb Starla.
Darleen couldn't believe it. To be treated this way in her own home!
She glared at the two maids, her voice shaking with rage. “Have you all lost your minds? Don’t you know who the master of this house is? This is not your playground!”
But the maids acted as if they hadn’t heard a word. They turned and calmly walked back to their post outside Starla’s door, ensuring her nap remained undisturbed.
Darleen felt like she was being tortured into insanity. For the first time, she felt utterly defeated by Starla. How had she never realized how cunning this woman truly was?
