Her laughter sent a jolt through Darleen, whose face was now a ghastly mix of purple and blue.
“Even if this isn't illegal, what about the child? You’re not going to arrest her for what happened to the child?”
“Does the child’s situation have anything to do with me?” Starla countered coolly.
“How can you say it has nothing to do with you?”
“Just because you say so? Where’s your proof?”
“The evidence clearly pointed to you,” Darleen insisted.
“Pointed to me? Was it confirmed?”
Darleen fell silent.
“If you could convict someone just by opening your mouth,” Starla said with a light, dismissive tone, “do you think the police would ever have a day off?”
As she spoke, she glanced at one of the officers with a wry smile.
In the end, the police left while Starla and Darleen were still locked in their argument. Once they were gone, Darleen collapsed onto the sofa, completely drained of energy.
In all her years as Mrs. Yelchin, she had never felt so utterly powerless against someone. She had always managed to handle any problem, no matter how difficult. She’d even had a hand in someone’s death and had walked away unscathed. But now… Starla.
Darleen looked at her, gritting her teeth. “You’re only acting like this because you have Herbert protecting you. Starla, I’m warning you, you should know when to back off. Do you really think the Farley family elders will let you marry into their family even after you divorce Fairfax? What will you be then?”
Darleen was cut off mid-sentence. Her heart pounded as Starla summoned the man from Yoran Country again. What was she planning now? From what Darleen had observed since morning, nothing good ever happened when Starla called on him.
“Have the living room cleaned up. Throw out anything that needs to be thrown out.”
At the mention of throwing things away, Darleen shot to her feet. “I’d like to see who dares!”
“Throw it out,” Starla commanded.
“Yes, Miss.” Garret nodded and signaled two of the maids. They immediately moved to gather the items that had been thrown down earlier, carrying them towards the front door. A moment later, the sound of things smashing on the ground echoed from outside.
“You… you vicious woman! You’re a monster!” Darleen screamed.
