Xenia and Darleen were completely overpowered by Starla. Brinley had tried to stay out of it, but she hadn’t eaten or had a drop of water all day. Now that Starla was in the house, especially after tampering with their takeout, who knew what she might have put in the water?
Brinley sent someone to ask Starla to come to her room, but Starla simply ignored the request. Left with no choice, Brinley had to go downstairs herself.
She sat on the sofa opposite Starla, watching her calmly eat from a bowl of fruit. The gnawing hunger made Brinley’s own suffering feel even more acute.
“What exactly do you want?” she asked, her voice cold.
“Have I done something?” Starla popped a red grape into her mouth and looked at Brinley with an air of pure innocence.
Brinley’s heart sank. The list of things she had done since arriving that day was endless!
Brinley’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You should learn to leave some room for mercy. Herbert can’t protect you forever.”
Starla almost laughed. It just went to show that a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law who got along were cut from the same cloth. Brinley was saying the exact same thing Darleen had said earlier.
She let out a small, derisive chuckle and set the fruit bowl down, her gaze locking with Brinley's. “Did you?”
“My mother’s troubles in Yoran Country should be resolved in the next day or two,” Brinley said, not answering the question directly.
Brinley’s face changed instantly.
“Your mother seems to be overstepping her bounds, don't you think?” Starla added.
“If she finds out about what happened today, she won't let it go,” Brinley retorted through gritted teeth. Then she added, a note of pride in her voice, “You know how she is. She’s always been very protective of me.”
It was true. Harriet had raised her well. Despite her bad temper, Harriet had always been generous with Brinley, especially when it came to money. And she was fiercely protective. Whenever Brinley got into a conflict, Harriet would go after the other person, regardless of whether Brinley was at fault. Even in the early days when Fairfax was protecting Starla, Harriet had pulled strings behind the scenes to cause trouble for her.
“Well,” Starla said smoothly, “that’s assuming she has the energy and ability to come after me.”
