Seeing Fairfax’s silence, Caden knew it had to be about Starla.
“You know, I’d say you kind of had it coming,” he couldn't help but remark. The comment earned him an even colder glare from Fairfax.
“I mean, look at what you guys have been up to lately,” Caden continued. “Brinley’s baby… you don’t still think Starla was behind that, do you?”
He had been drunk the other night, but now that he was sober, Caden couldn’t fathom how Fairfax could still believe it.
“This is much bigger than the baby now.”
“Right, I get it,” Caden said. “It’s not about you all going after her anymore. Now she’s coming after you, isn’t she?”
Fairfax’s silence was answer enough. That was exactly what Starla was doing at the Yelchin estate—stirring up trouble.
The elevator arrived, and Fairfax stepped inside. Caden followed, asking casually, “So how is she making your lives miserable?”
“Has your old man worked you into a stupor?” Fairfax shot back. “Something this big happens today, and you haven’t heard?”
“I’ve been swamped,” Caden admitted. “He’s in a hurry for me to take over the company so he can retire.”
If it were up to him, Caden would never take the job. He didn’t want to be stuck in an office all day like Fairfax, with no time for a personal life.
As they reached the lobby, they ran into Vivian, who was just returning from an errand. The moment Caden’s eyes met hers, his expression softened.
But when Vivian saw him with Fairfax, she let out a quiet, disgruntled huff. The sound was so faint that Fairfax didn't hear it, but Caden did. That girl…
Caden watched it go. Fairfax’s in a real hurry to get back. Things must be pretty bad.
Instead of leaving, Caden turned and walked back into the Yelchin Group building, dialing a number as he went. The person on the other end picked up. “What is it?”
“Hey, baby. I brought you a gift from my business trip. Do you want to come down and get it, or should I bring it up?”
Vivian was silent for a moment. “Since you’re hanging out with my boss, I think I’ll pass on the gift.”
Caden felt a muscle in his jaw twitch. “Wait, what’s that supposed to mean?”
Why would she reject a gift just because he was with Fairfax? Was there something wrong with being with Fairfax?
