For days, Xenia had been too humiliated to see her friends. Her prospective fiancé was involved with her own sister-in-law. It was a complete disgrace!
Brinley stepped forward. “Let’s go to my room first.”
With Starla’s people everywhere, anything they said here would undoubtedly get back to her.
Once they were inside Brinley’s room, Darleen was the first to speak. “What about the police? Why haven’t they arrested that woman yet?”
If they would just lock that bitch up, the Yelchin family could finally have some peace.
At the mention of the police, a flicker of emotion crossed Brinley’s downcast eyes.
“Mom,” she said softly, “I want Sally to come and take care of me.”
Sally was one of Harriet’s trusted aides. Brinley hadn’t brought her back from the hospital immediately, worried Darleen would object, insisting the Yelchin staff was perfectly capable. But now, with Starla living in the same house and the police investigation still pending, she felt she needed Sally by her side to feel safe.
Darleen’s expression soured at the request, but considering the current state of chaos, she eventually nodded. “Fine, have Sally come. And bring whoever else is left at the Seabrook estate. Bring them all over.”
Did Starla think she was the only one who could bring in reinforcements? Brinley’s family wasn’t powerless. If Starla wanted a war, they would give her one.
Brinley smiled at Darleen’s words. “Okay, I’ll call Sally and have her bring the rest of the staff. My mother is away for a while anyway.”
Darleen nodded again, her mood still grim.
“Yes! What am I supposed to do?” Xenia’s voice broke, and she began to cry. “It’s all Starla’s fault! That bitch is seducing him!”
Her outburst darkened the expressions of both Darleen and Brinley.
“Didn’t I tell you?” Brinley snapped. “You need to learn some of Starla’s tricks!”
“Learn from her? But I…”
“Well, what other choice do we have? Are we just going to let her use Herbert to torment us?” Brinley was genuinely annoyed now, looking at Xenia as if she were a pathetic, useless child. Hadn’t Xenia learned anything from how she herself handled Fairfax? She couldn't even capture one man's heart. How useless!
