Darleen and Brinley were in complete agreement. The only way to permanently get rid of Starla’s meddling was to break her and Herbert up for good. And they had placed this monumental task squarely on Xenia’s shoulders.
…
Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Fairfax walked in to find the space completely transformed. All traces of Xenia’s previous occupancy were gone.
Starla was lounging on a chair, talking on the phone. Seeing Fairfax enter, she murmured into the receiver, “Yeah, let’s have dinner tomorrow. I’ll call you back,” before hanging up.
The mention of dinner tomorrow sent a wave of barely contained rage through Fairfax.
“Was that Herbert?” he asked, his voice cold.
Starla set her phone down and shot him an icy glare, offering no reply. The look in her eyes, however, screamed, “It’s none of your business.”
That defiant stare was more than Fairfax could handle; he was so furious he felt his head might split open. He strode forward and yanked her to her feet.
“You agreed not to divorce me, yet you’re still carrying on with Herbert. What do you take me for?” Every word was laced with venom.
He had always been sensitive about her relationship with Herbert. Now, with her living in the Yelchin estate and still being so entangled with him, Fairfax was consumed by an anger he couldn’t vent. He remembered what Herbert had mentioned to him, and a new wave of fear washed over him.
Fairfax gripped Starla’s wrist with one hand and wrapped the other around her slender waist.
“Promise me you’ll stop seeing Herbert, okay?”
He suspected Herbert had only learned about ‘that’ because he’d been spending so much time with Starla. If they kept meeting, he was terrified of what might happen.
“And you?” Starla countered. “Can you stop seeing the Yelchins? Can you cut ties with Brinley?”
Fairfax froze, the words catching in his throat.
Fairfax grunted in pain, his grip on her wrist and waist instinctively slackening. “You damn woman…”
She was ruthless. The force of the kick sent a jolt of pain so intense that beads of cold sweat formed on his forehead.
Starla simply crossed her arms and settled back onto the chair.
Fairfax, grimacing, straightened up and limped over to the armchair beside her. It took him a long moment to recover.
“You’ve thrown your tantrum, you’ve burned what you wanted to burn. Shouldn’t you have let off enough steam by now?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Starla shot back.
Let off steam? As if it were that simple. The fire inside her could never be extinguished. It wasn’t just anger; it was hatred. A deep, irreconcilable feud that one day of destruction couldn’t possibly resolve.
