Even if Fairfax had originally given Luwood Mountain to Starla, Darleen was determined to move in. Living under the same roof as that damned woman felt like it was shaving years off her life. She was going to go mad from the stress.

Darleen went to find Fairfax and saw him emerging from the room, his face a thunderous mask. The wound in his abdomen was shallow and had stopped bleeding; even the bloodstain on his shirt had dried.

Seeing him turn to head downstairs, Darleen called out sharply, “Fairfax.”

He turned, his gaze cold. It was obvious that everyone’s patience had worn thin, all thanks to Starla.

Seeing Darleen now, Fairfax automatically assumed she was there to start another argument. As she approached, he frowned. “What is it now?”

Everything that needed to be said had been said. The problem remained unsolved, and he had no desire to deal with any more of it.

“We are moving to Luwood Mountain,” Darleen declared, her tone unyielding.

Darleen was truly exhausted. Starla’s recent antics had frayed her nerves completely, and today’s events had left her utterly drained.

Ironically, when Fairfax and Starla had first married, she had desperately wanted Starla to move in so she could torment her. Now, she was just as desperate to get away. She couldn’t stand it for another day, another minute, another second!

Fairfax frowned, but before he could speak, Darleen continued, “I refuse to live with her any longer. You either take her to Luwood Mountain, or we move there.”

Darleen stared at Fairfax in disbelief. “What did you say?”

Luwood Mountain… gone? Did ‘gone’ mean what she thought it meant?

As a suffocating dread filled her chest, Fairfax added, “You can’t move in.”

Those words confirmed her worst fears. Luwood Mountain was no more. Darleen felt the world spin, and she swayed on her feet.

What kind of profligate has the Yelchin family been saddled with? All that money, all that effort, just gone. Completely and utterly destroyed.
