A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 36

At the Farley Group, Fairfax walked through a bustling office filled with employees from all over the world. As he approached Herbert’s office, he saw Herbert signing a document and handing it to his assistant. "Scan this and send it to Hoggart Group immediately. Tell them we agree to their terms."

"Right away, sir," the assistant, Rudolf, replied. He turned, saw Fairfax, and gave a polite, professional nod before walking away.

Fairfax stepped inside. "Closing another international deal?"

He had to admit, Herbert had built an empire that thrived both domestically and abroad. While the Yelchins were publicly known as the top family in Marina City, the Farleys were simply more discreet. In truth, the Yelchin family might not even be a match for them. The Farley family's international projects were booming.

Fairfax sank onto the sofa and lit a cigarette.

Herbert didn't answer. He closed a folder with a sharp snap, then rose and sat in the chair opposite Fairfax. The two men's shirts were a study in contrast: Fairfax, in dark blue, projected not the expected calm but a restless arrogance. Herbert, in a pale-colored shirt, exuded a clean, understated confidence beneath his serious demeanor.

Rudolf had someone bring in two cups of coffee. Herbert picked one up and took a sip. "I'm surprised you actually had the time."

Hearing the question, Herbert set down his coffee cup with a deliberate, elegant grace. His voice was calm but forceful. "A truly responsible man wouldn't let things with a woman get so out of control. Let alone two of them."

The words hit Fairfax like a physical blow. Out of control? He had to admit, things were a mess. Thanks to Starla's actions, all of Marina City now knew that Brinley had spent the last six months clinging to her married brother-in-law. She was being called a homewrecker, a label far more scandalous in her situation than it would be for a typical mistress.

Fairfax flicked the ash from his cigarette and let out a humorless laugh. "This morning, a man from Yoran Country picked Starla up from the hospital."
