"I didn't quite understand why she was suddenly making such a scene," Fairfax continued, his gaze on Herbert sharpening. "But now, Herbert, why don't you tell me why she's doing this?"
Fairfax's look was now openly accusatory.
Herbert’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What do you think?"
"She would never cause this much trouble unless she had a powerful backer," Fairfax said, his stare growing more intense.
Meeting Fairfax's sharp gaze, a mocking smile touched Herbert’s lips. "Is it that she won't cause trouble without a backer, or that she dares not?"
Fairfax froze.
"You know your wife quite well, don't you?" Herbert continued coolly. "To know that the moment she had support, she would definitely fight back."
What did that imply? It implied that Fairfax had always known just how suppressed Starla felt in the Yelchin family, especially over the past six months while he'd been at Brinley's side.
The tension in the office became thick enough to cut with a knife. Fairfax's eyes grew colder. "Herbert, what are you trying to say? Are you really the one helping her? You're my friend, and yet you…"
"You've really spent too much time with Brinley," she said scornfully. "You're starting to think like she does—insanely."
"Starla, don't push it!" Fairfax snapped. "Just tell me where you are. I'm coming to get you."
He needed to see her now.
"To talk about Brinley?" she shot back. "There's nothing to talk about."
