A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 417

Fairfax was on his way to see Herbert when his phone rang. As Xenia’s voice crackled over the line, telling him that Starla was also involved with a man from Yoran Country, a chilling coldness flooded his eyes. The frost grew, spreading until it bloomed into a quiet, simmering rage.

His grip tightened on the phone. “Involved with a man from Yoran Country? Xenia, do you want me to rip that tongue out of your mouth?”

Even as he said it, a part of Fairfax believed her. But given Xenia’s history of bad-mouthing Starla, he couldn’t help but feel a sliver of doubt.

“I’m serious,” Xenia insisted. “Mom and I both heard her.”

“Heard what?” Fairfax demanded.

“She told that man from Yoran Country that she missed him. What kind of relationship involves saying something like that to another man?”

Any disbelief Fairfax had harbored now began to crumble. He gripped the phone so tightly he thought it might shatter in his hand.

“Fairfax, she’s a promiscuous tramp,” Xenia shouted into the phone. “I don’t know what you and Herbert see in her. That woman has brought nothing but misery to our family! I told you how awful she was, but you wouldn’t listen. You got angry with Mom and me. Do you see it now? She’s just a slut!”

“Enough!” Fairfax roared, the word “slut” flipping a switch inside him. It was instinctual. He’d hated it when Xenia used that word for Starla before, and even now, with everything that had happened between them, his immediate reaction was to defend her.

His outburst stunned Xenia into silence for a moment. Then, her voice dripped with disbelief. “You’re still protecting her? Even after she betrayed you like that, you’re still protecting her?” She took a sharp, suffocating breath. “You’re all bewitched. You’re all insane!”

With that, Xenia hung up, utterly disappointed in her brother.
