The weight of it all was becoming too much for Darleen to bear.
“What do we do now? Xenia’s not a child; she’s too heavy. How are we supposed to get her to a hospital?”
A small child could be carried, but Xenia was a grown woman. Even carrying her on his back would be a struggle for Fairfax. Darleen thought resentfully of all the times she’d told her daughter to eat less, that a slender figure was more attractive, but Xenia had never listened. She might have lost a little weight recently, but it was a drop in the bucket.
When Fairfax remained silent, Darleen’s frustration boiled over, and she snapped at him. “Well, say something!”
She was haunted by the memory of her youngest son, who had died from a high fever at just one year old. The mere thought of a fever sent her into a panic, and seeing Xenia so ill left her completely overwhelmed.
“Let’s just get her to the hospital,” Fairfax said, his voice laced with frustration.
“How?” Darleen pressed.
Fairfax fell silent again. How? The reality that Starla had blocked all vehicle access hit him, and he kicked the banister in a fit of rage.
“How? I’ll carry her, that’s how!”
He stormed into Xenia’s room, hoisted her onto his back, and headed for the door, with Darleen hurrying after him. She was already exhausted and hungry, and now this. The night air was bitingly cold, and Darleen quickly took off her own coat to wrap around Xenia.
“She’s really putting us through hell,” Darleen muttered through clenched teeth. “I don’t know how much more of this I can take!”
This life was driving her insane. If it continued, she was sure she’d be the one having a breakdown, not Brinley.
Thinking of Brinley, she added, “At least Brinley is holding up. With Starla breathing down our necks, her depression hasn’t acted up once. If she started having episodes now, I think I’d lose my mind.”
