A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 433

It was nearly eleven at night by the time Fairfax finally got Xenia to the hospital. But when he tried to pay, he found that all his accounts were frozen.

Frantically, he called Gabriel to make the payment, but because the patient was a Yelchin, the transaction was blocked. Starla had locked down the entire family's finances.

This time, Fairfax didn't call Starla. He called Herbert. They had been so close for so long. He couldn't believe Herbert would stand by and let Starla do this, not when a life was on the line.

After Fairfax explained the situation, there was a long pause on the other end of the line. Then, Herbert’s voice came, flat and detached. “There’s nothing I can do.”

Those words sent a chill straight to Fairfax’s heart.

“You introduced my wife to someone from the Hoggart Group, and now you’re helping her destroy me? Herbert, what did I ever do to you?”

Fairfax’s control finally snapped. He could tolerate their business rivalry, but this was different. This was about Xenia’s life.

“You’ve been helping her, protecting her all this time—it’s because of that man from Hoggart, isn’t it?” he accused.

He didn’t know who the man was, but he was now certain the Hoggart Group’s attacks were revenge on Starla’s behalf. And Herbert had to be involved. In Fairfax’s mind, it was clear: Herbert had brokered a deal.

“What did he offer you?” Fairfax pressed, his voice thick with rage. “Unbelievable, Herbert. You used your best friend’s wife to curry favor with the Hoggart Group. I never realized you were so disgusting.”
