“So, my mother’s troubles really aren’t resolved?”
Her mother would never use a word like surrender unless the situation was dire. That one word confirmed that things were far worse than Brinley had imagined.
“That’s correct,” Clyde said.
“Can she handle it?” Brinley asked, her voice laced with urgency. The unresolved trouble was now her main concern.
Clyde’s silence on the other end of the line was deafening, amplifying Brinley’s panic.
“Is it serious?” she asked, rephrasing the question.
This time, he answered. “Yes.”
That single word was enough to make her knees feel weak. Brinley didn’t remember how the call ended, but long after she hung up, her mind was still reeling.
Serious trouble. For years, her mother had been in control, making even the most complex problems seem simple. When had it ever taken her this long to resolve an issue? And yet, now…
Brinley took a shaky breath. “Sally.”
Sally’s face was also a mask of grave concern. This was not the outcome they had hoped for.
“Yes, miss,” she said, stepping forward.
“Never mind. I’ll call Felix.”
At this point, Brinley knew with chilling certainty that she had to get out of Marina City immediately. Her mother was powerless to help. If she stayed, Starla would crush her. She couldn’t endure another day of this torment; she just wanted to escape.
