A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 443

Seeing Starla and Herbert together without a care in the world made Fairfax’s gut twist with rage. He looked ready to take them down with him.

...

Caden had planned to take him out for a meal, but Fairfax was in no condition to sit in a restaurant. So, Caden got takeout and brought it to Fairfax at the Yelchin Group office. He noticed his friend hadn't been eating properly lately. He sighed, wanting to say something, but held his tongue.

He didn't dare mention Starla's connection to the Hoggart Group, terrified that if he said the wrong thing, his own family's Larson Group might be caught in the crossfire.

“Have you seen Herbert recently?” Fairfax asked, breaking the silence.

“Don’t ask me to get in the middle of this,” Caden replied. He couldn’t persuade Starla, and from the looks of it, Herbert hated Fairfax’s guts.

Caden couldn't figure out why Herbert’s animosity ran so deep. He'd initially assumed it was all because of Starla, but Herbert’s attacks on the Yelchin Group were even more vicious than the Hoggart Group's. There had to be something more to it.

Fairfax fell silent, a wave of despair washing over him. His friendship with Herbert was strained, his marriage was destroyed. Everything was gone. His life felt like a cruel joke.

Unable to contain his curiosity, Caden finally asked, “What’s the real beef between you and Herbert?”

A flash of pain crossed Fairfax’s eyes. Beef? No, it was more than that. Ever since Herbert found out about that incident, what he felt was pure hatred toward him.
