“When do you plan to end all this?” Herbert asked.
“Before I go back, Brinley, Xenia, and Darleen will all be behind bars,” Starla declared.
Her return to Yoran Country would mark the end of it all.
The moment Darleen heard the verdict, she would probably wish she had stayed with the Yelchin family, where at least she could have lived. But with this stack of evidence, she was facing death.
Herbert nodded. “And before you leave, you need to finalize the divorce with Fairfax. I don’t want you to have any connection to him.”
His words sent a jolt through Starla’s heart. Though he hadn’t said it outright, the meaning was unmistakable—it was a confession of his feelings for her.
Starla set down her coffee cup, her gaze turning serious as she met his.
“Don’t say anything,” Herbert said quickly, stopping her before she could speak.
Starla remained silent.
“Once you’re done with him, you’ll be a whole new person.”
“No matter how new I am, I’m not worthy.”
“Whether you’re worthy or not isn’t for you to decide. Besides, your brother already gave me his blessing.”
“What?” The color drained from Starla’s face. “What did he agree to?”
“How about next spring? The weather in Yoran Country is warm then. Perfect for a wedding.”
“What?” Starla was already reeling from the news about Yardley, but the mention of marriage felt like a hand closing around her throat. “Why are you doing this?”
Looking into his deep eyes, she saw an unwavering resolve that broke her heart.
