“So, are you going to help Sally, or are you going back to your room to lie down?” Starla asked, her gaze fixed on Brinley. The warmth in her eyes was like a venom, attacking Brinley's resolve.
“I gave birth to two children for the Yelchin family!” Brinley cried, trying to play her last card. “Since you’re the one in charge now, you can’t treat me this way!”
“Were those children born for me?” Starla retorted.
Brinley’s heart plummeted. So that was it. The last shred of decency Starla had shown—allowing Sally to do Brinley's work during her recovery—was gone. Now that her postpartum period was over, she was no different from Darleen or Xenia in Starla’s eyes.
Realization dawned, and Brinley’s voice rose to a scream. “You’re just deliberately tormenting me!”
“I am.”
Once again, two simple words were all it took. Brinley’s face froze. She stared at Starla, completely disarmed. No matter what she said, Starla simply admitted to it, leaving her with no ground to stand on.
Seeing Brinley speechless, Starla let out a soft laugh. “See? I’m being perfectly open about it. Unlike you, hiding everything you do until it becomes a demon that tortures you.”
“I haven’t done anything! Stop spouting nonsense!” Brinley shot back, her face turning a purplish hue.
A demon? Her only demon was the fact that Starla had yet to pay for the death of her child. All the evidence pointed to her, so why was she still here, reigning over the Yelchin family? And why was Herbert protecting her?
Starla simply smiled, saying nothing.
