“You… you’ll die a horrible death!” Darleen finally snapped, her fear turning to rage. “Starla, you’ll get what’s coming to you!”

The response was immediate: two sharp slaps from a nearby maid. Darleen clutched her stinging cheeks, her eyes locked with Starla’s.

Starla merely raised an eyebrow. “You’re right. Karma.”

Darleen froze.

“Isn’t everything happening to you right now… your karma?” Starla asked softly. “You probably didn’t believe in it when you were doing all those things, did you? And now that you’re facing the consequences, you want the person delivering them to suffer as well?”

The mention of “all those things you did” made Darleen’s heart hammer against her ribs. She wanted to argue, to deny it, but guilt silenced her.

“By the way,” Starla added, her voice dripping with cruel sweetness, “if Xenia happens to die from this fever tonight, don’t blame me for her death. That will be your karma, too. After all, they say karma doesn’t just fall on you. Your descendants can’t escape it either.”

Each word was a curse. Darleen stumbled backward, her legs giving way. She almost collapsed on the floor. Starla’s message was chillingly clear: I am your karma.

Just then, Brinley’s phone rang. She snatched it up. “Hello?”

It was the hospital. As the doctor on the other end spoke, Brinley began to tremble violently.
