That wretched girl from the orphanage! She had underestimated her, truly and completely. If she had known Starla was capable of climbing this high, she never would have done those things to her, no matter what.
"Miss …" Sally began.
"What am I supposed to do?" Brinley lamented, her voice cracking. "My mother is stuck in Yoran Country, and who knows what's happening with her. And Fairfax has Quest now."
She felt utterly drained, her strength depleted. All she wanted, more than anything, was to go to the hospital and see her son.
Instead of offering comfort, Sally changed the subject, her tone suddenly business-like. "Haven't I gone without pay for three months now?"
The question hung in the air, and Brinley’s expression darkened. A dangerous glint appeared in her eyes as she looked at Sally.
"What are you trying to say?" she asked, her voice cold as ice.
"I want to quit," Sally stated plainly.
She was no fool. In the two days they'd been at the Yelchin estate, she had seen enough. Starla had both Fairfax and Darleen under her thumb. There was no chance for Brinley to regain her former power here. With Harriet unable to send any good news from Yoran Country, the situation was dire.
Sally could tolerate Brinley being tormented, but her own old bones couldn't take the abuse. The Seabrook family had treated her well over the years, and they trusted her, but at the end of the day, she was just an employee. She was paid to work, not to sacrifice her life.
