Tanya was a notorious gossip. She knew Fairfax and Felix were enemies, but it was rare for their feud to escalate into a public beating like this. Why had Fairfax nearly beaten Felix to death?

Then, an hour later, the plot twist: Brinley, who had been playing the role of the grieving, devoted widow at the Yelchin estate ever since Faraday's death, emerged from Felix's car. She had even repeatedly mistaken Fairfax for Faraday, a supposed sign of her deep love and sorrow. "What else could it be?" Starla replied coolly. "Brinley and Felix are having an affair."

"But he's Faraday's sworn enemy!" Tanya exclaimed, shocked.

"Exactly. Exciting, isn't it?" Starla said with a light laugh.

"Exciting is one word for it! This is insane! Surely Fairfax can't possibly still believe in Brinley after this?"

He had seen it with his own eyes. If Fairfax could still trust her after this, then he was truly a lost cause. His brain must have been kicked by a donkey.

"Whether he'll continue to believe her... that's hard to say," Starla mused.

"You're right," Tanya conceded. "Knowing Fairfax's brain, he'll find a way to believe Brinley, no matter what. He'll probably even say you forced her to do it."

Starla fell silent for a moment. Tanya had a point. Given Brinley's manipulative nature, she was more than capable of spinning such a tale. And given Fairfax's gullibility, he would almost certainly believe it.

"Whatever. If she wants to blame me, let her," Starla said with a shrug, as if she had grown accustomed to Fairfax's distrust.

To have become so used to a lack of trust in a marriage... it was a testament to how much of a failure it had been.
