Herbert shot a glacial look at Fairfax's back before turning to leave. Caden watched Herbert walk away, his lips parting as if to say something. But Herbert was already gone, leaving Caden to face Fairfax alone.
“Herbert, wait…” Caden started, wanting to urge him to talk some sense into Fairfax, but his plea was met with Herbert’s retreating figure. Frustrated, Caden ran a hand through his hair.
Across the lobby, Fairfax, having been hung up on again, spun around in a fury. His eyes met Caden's.
Fairfax’s expression hardened. Caden strode forward. “Were you just questioning Starla about Harriet getting beaten up?”
Fairfax’s face was like stone. He gave Caden a single warning glance and started to walk away. This time, Caden had had enough. He grabbed Fairfax’s arm. “Have you completely given up on Starla?”
Fairfax was already on edge. Caden’s words made his gaze turn frigid. “Let go.”
“You can fight with Starla over Brinley, that’s one thing,” Caden pressed, his grip tightening. “But now you’re questioning her because of Brinley’s mother? Have you lost your mind?”
At that moment, Caden fully understood Herbert’s words from the other night: I support you getting a divorce. Herbert couldn’t stand it anymore, and now, neither could he.
Fairfax’s eyes were ice. “Do you have any idea what she’s done?”
“What has she done?” Caden shot back, his own temper flaring. It seemed Fairfax had no clue what had actually transpired.
“Your own wife was hemorrhaging! She called an ambulance, and Harriet blocked it from entering Petal Villa! If Herbert and I hadn't shown up today, she would have died right there!” Caden roared. “And you're blaming her for beating Harriet? In my opinion, she should have killed her!”
The rage in Caden’s voice was palpable. But for Fairfax, his words were a bombshell. His mind went blank, a deafening roar filling his ears. He stared at Caden, his pupils constricting in disbelief. “What did you say?”
“I said, I support your divorce too! Go spend the rest of your damn life with Brinley and stop torturing Starla!”
With that, Caden angrily shoved him away and stormed off. The pressure on Fairfax’s arm vanished, but a chilling cold spread through his entire body.
