What Janina didn't understand was, why would you take off a ring just to change your clothes?
That is, until her fingers brushed against something metallic inside her handbag.
She lowered her head, pretending to zip up her bag, and glanced inside.
It was a ring.
"Damn it."
You can never be too careful around snakes.
It must have been planted in her bag by the woman on the staircase.
Without changing her expression, Janina wrapped the ring in the tissue she was holding and concealed it in her palm.
When they reached the living room, a small crowd had already formed.
Yvonne was distraught over her lost ring.
Elena had her arm around Yvonne's shoulders, comforting her softly. When she saw Janina, she asked sharply, "Have you seen Yvonne's ring?"
Janina shrugged and shook her head. "Haven't seen it."
Janina casually glanced at the woman standing next to Yvonne. It was the same person who had bumped into her in the stairwell.
Their eyes met, and Janina saw a flicker of guilt in the woman's gaze before she looked away. A small, humorless smile touched Janina's lips.
Yvonne's eyes were filled with tears as she sobbed.
"Ms. Quinn, it's all my fault. If this ring wasn't passed down from my great-grandmother, I wouldn't be troubling everyone like this. It's just that it means so much to me."
She looked up, her tearful eyes scanning the room.
"I'm so sorry to have bothered all of you. If anyone has seen it or found it, please, I beg you to return it to me."
When the guests heard it was a family heirloom, they understood its significance went far beyond its monetary value.
"Miss Moore, what does the ring look like? We can help you keep an eye out for it," one of the young ladies in the crowd asked.
"It has a blue sapphire on it, and the design is quite unique. Please, if you could all help me look, I would be so grateful."
Janina tightened her grip on the ring in her hand and slowly moved closer to the woman who had bumped into her.
