Amidst this touching scene, Janina felt nothing.
She glanced around, confirming that the place was genuinely poor.
Why was her luck so terrible?
She had just escaped a scumbag ex-husband only to be saddled with dirt-poor biological parents. Janina was starting to think she was a magnet for misfortune.
Sigh. Life was a real bitch.
The Gable family was about to leave with Brooke when their adoptive mother, Grace, wheeled herself out and called her name.
Even though Brooke wasn't her biological child, she had raised her like her own for over twenty years.
Seeing her about to leave, Grace's heart ached with reluctance.
But the moment Genevieve saw Grace in the wheelchair, she couldn't believe her eyes.
The beautiful Grace she once knew was now paralyzed. A wave of triumphant satisfaction washed over her.
Genevieve, cloaked in her fine clothes, scanned Grace from head to toe, an irrepressible smirk playing on her lips.
"Well, well, isn't it Grace? I almost didn't recognize you. It's only been twenty-something years. How did you end up like this?" Her voice was laced with mockery and contempt.
Grace lifted her head and saw a woman standing before her — fair-skinned, heavily made up, and dressed with meticulous elegance.
"You… you're Genevieve!" Grace's voice trembled. She never expected to see this woman again.
Genevieve scoffed, showing no warmth for her old friend. "You made my daughter suffer for so long, and I haven't even begun to settle the score with you," she said coldly. "I can't stand another second in this godforsaken place."
Brooke clung to Genevieve's arm and shot Grace a look.
"I'm going home now. From this day on, I have nothing to do with you!"
With that, Brooke turned and walked away.
"Brooke… how could you…" Grace choked, unable to finish her sentence.
