Abandoned by All I Took It All Back novel Chapter 76

"Mom—" Janina called her 'Mom' for the first time. Her voice was quiet, but it was enough to make Grace's eyes well up again.

"Yes, my daughter, I'm here."

"Your legs… and Dad's eyes… what happened?" Janina asked cautiously.

Grace sighed. "Two years ago, your father and I went into the mountains to gather medicinal herbs to make some extra money. We'd often go whenever we weren't busy with farm work."

"That day, I saw an orchid growing on a steep cliff. As I reached for it, my foot slipped, and I fell. Your father tried to grab me but couldn't hold on, and we both fell down the cliff."

"That's how my legs were broken. Your father hit the back of his head when he landed. When he woke up, he couldn't see anymore."

Grace finished her story with a resigned smile. "At first, we couldn't accept it. One of us crippled, the other blind… we didn't know what we were going to do. But eventually, we came to terms with it. Your second brother even made this wheelchair for me. It's as good as one you'd buy in a store."

Grace patted her own thigh. "I don't have any feeling in them now."

As she spoke, Grace rolled up her pant leg.

"Did you go to a hospital for a check-up?" Janina asked.

"We went to the town hospital. The doctor said the chances of recovery were slim. The family was already struggling, so we just gave up on treatment."

"You should still go to a major hospital for an examination. What if there's a chance of recovery? You wouldn't have to be in a wheelchair forever," Janina suggested.

Grace nodded hesitantly. "We'll… talk about that later. Nina, you must be hungry. Sit down for a bit, I'll go make us some food."

The family didn't have much money, and since they had lost their ability to work two years ago, they couldn't afford to waste any on a hopeless cause and become a bigger burden on their children.

Grace left the room and went to the kitchen. Propping herself up on two crutches, she rose from her wheelchair. It was the only way she could stand.
