Hearing the person beside her toss and turn for the third time, Janina finally broke the silence.
"Sixth Sister, are you still awake?"
In the quiet room, Janina's voice sounded particularly loud.
Natalie was startled for a moment, then answered with a soft "Mm."
Janina decided to break the delicate tension. She turned her head. Though she couldn't see her sister's face in the dark, she faced in her direction.
"I can't sleep either. How about we talk for a bit?"
"About what?" Natalie replied flatly.
Janina thought for a moment. She didn't know what to talk about either, so she decided to start with getting to know the family.
"Tell me stories about Mom and Dad, or our brothers. I've missed out on more than twenty years, and I want to understand them better," Janina said sincerely.
Perhaps it was Janina's earnestness, or perhaps the topic of family was comforting. Natalie's guard around this new sister began to lower, replaced by a flicker of closeness.
That night, the two sisters talked for a long time.
Neither of them knew when they finally fell asleep.
When Janina woke up, only her parents and eldest brother were home. Everyone else had already left for work.
From her talk with Natalie last night, she now had a basic understanding of her brothers' jobs and the family's situation. Her eldest brother, Easton, managed the farm. During the busy season, he would hire help from the village. Before their parents' accident, the three of them worked the farm together. After they lost their ability to work, the entire burden fell on Easton's shoulders.
Her second brother, Sutton, worked at a construction site on the outskirts of the city. Natalie had mentioned he was trying to get some kind of certification. He had already failed the test twice. If he passed, his salary would be higher. He usually came home once a week.
Her third brother, West, was a chef at a hotel and only had two days off a month, which was when he came home.
