Usually, only Ethan’s car ever parked here. Today, the spot was empty. Ethan had sent his driver over to Laura’s place to find Isabella, so there was no car in sight.
The front desk staff noticed someone pulling up right at the building’s entrance. Both receptionists stepped outside. When they realized it was Isabella getting out of the car, one of them froze for a second, then quickly turned back inside. She hurried to her workstation and whispered to her coworker, “Mrs. Adams is here.”
As Isabella walked in, the two receptionists greeted her politely. One walked her to the executive elevator, swiped her access card, and let Isabella ride up to the top floor on her own. The other receptionist picked up the phone and called Ethan’s secretary, who immediately passed the news along to Ethan.
Ethan had been a little out of it at home, but once he was back at the office, he got swept up in work. In his position, every minute counted. Every document he signed, every decision he made, involved millions. Even though he still wasn’t feeling great, a cup of coffee had perked him up. When he heard Isabella was there, he was caught off guard.
Didn’t I tell the driver not to bring her? Or maybe she’s here to admit she was wrong and make things right?
A hundred questions ran through his mind. Should he use this chance to patch things up? Should he swallow his pride? While he was still lost in thought, Isabella knocked and came in.
Ethan noticed she hadn’t come empty-handed, and that little detail lifted his mood. She does care, he thought. She must want to make peace, bringing something to cheer me up.
He set his pen down. He almost got up to greet her, but halfway out of his seat, he changed his mind and sat back. He wasn’t about to let Isabella see how much he’d been waiting for her.
Ethan leaned back in his black office chair, keeping his face unreadable as Isabella walked over, holding something.
“Busy?” Isabella asked.
She set a cup of herbal tea down in front of him.
