Susan’s face tightened, but she still tried to reason with her. “Isabella, Jennifer is the head of this family. You’ve just married in and you haven’t found your footing yet. Don’t keep doing things that will make her unhappy.”
“Ethan gives you spending money, doesn’t he? If there’s something you want, just tell me. I’ll get it for you. Ethan already said it. Whatever you need, I’m supposed to make it happen for you.”
“You have everything you need. You have money to spend. Why do you keep running around starting things? All this effort might not even pay off.”
Isabella’s voice was calm but firm. “Susan, please, let me handle my own life. As long as I’m not doing anything that hurts the Adams family, it shouldn’t matter.”
“Isabella, I’m not trying to control you. I’m just looking out for you. Jennifer already isn’t your biggest fan. If you keep this up, she’s just going to like you even less.”
“I don’t need Jennifer to like me. I didn’t marry her. I don’t have to live with her. Whether she likes me or not doesn’t really change anything for me.” Isabella’s tone was steady. “And don’t tell me I’m not really Mrs. Adams just because I haven’t moved into the Adams estate. Ethan and I are legally married.”
She wasn’t living with Jennifer, so whatever her mother-in-law said didn’t matter to her. Unless Jennifer insisted they move in together, she could just tune her out. If that day ever came, she’d deal with it. In her last life, when she and Ethan were fighting, and she was going head-to-head with Natalie, Jennifer never said a word. She just let Isabella crash and burn, never even bothering to acknowledge her.
Susan’s lips pressed into a thin line. “I’m only trying to help. If you won’t listen, there’s nothing I can do. I just hope you won’t regret it later.”
“I don’t do things I’ll regret. But thanks.” Isabella didn’t wait for a reply. She turned and walked away.
Susan didn’t follow.
