But she couldn’t avoid the truth. She was going to lose the baby, and there was nothing she could do about it.
Her mind kept circling back to Isabella. Lately, Isabella didn’t even bother pretending to respect her anymore. Ethan was getting closer to Isabella too, always looking out for her. Natalie’s last attempt to set Isabella up had fallen flat, and the jealousy was eating her alive.
If she was going to lose the baby anyway, at least she could use the situation to her advantage. Maybe she could finally drag Isabella down with her.
That was why she called Isabella, insisting she come back home.
After sitting alone for a few minutes, Natalie stood up and headed downstairs.
Cynthia wasn’t around. Natalie called for the butler. “Where’s Cynthia?”
The butler answered, “She said a friend asked her out shopping.”
Natalie frowned. “She sure knows how to enjoy herself.”
Cynthia never had to worry about a thing. She lived in luxury, drifting through her days with nothing to do. The only time she had to lift a finger was when Jackson was at home, and even then, it was just to keep him company. Natalie couldn’t wait for the day Jackson was gone and the house was finally hers and Jordan’s. Cynthia would be the first person she kicked out.
There was also Cynthia’s money. Natalie wanted it all back. Everything the Lane family owned should belong to her and Jordan. Cynthia wasn’t even Jordan’s real mom, just a stepmother. Why should she have any claim on the family’s wealth?
Jackson had bought Cynthia a house and some storefronts in the city center, so she’d never have to worry about money. The location was prime, the rent would always come in, and Cynthia’s future was set. Jackson had even made it clear to Jordan more than once that those assets were Cynthia’s for life. Jordan wasn’t allowed to take them back, not even after Jackson was gone.
It wasn’t like Cynthia owned that much, but Natalie wanted it all. Cynthia wasn’t related to Jordan by blood. Everything she had would eventually end up with Isabella, and Natalie couldn’t stand the thought. Why should Isabella get anything for free?
Just thinking about Isabella benefitting made Natalie furious.
